Over the past decade, changes in technology have presented unique and evolving challenges for parents. The increased use of smart phones, tablets and other listening devices has presented a new category of individuals at risk for noise-induced hearing loss in teens and young adults.

Excessive exposure to noises can result in permanent damage to a person’s hearing. Noise-induced hearing loss is caused by exposure to loud sounds over a long period of time. With the advent of smart phones and tablets, teenagers and young adults have access to listening to music, podcasts and videos on a near constant basis. The average smart phone can produce volumes of up to 90-105 decibels. Listening to devices at full-volume with the use of earbuds or headphones on a daily basis has the potential to negatively impact an individual’s hearing.

  • Turn it down: Use a lower volume when listening to music, listening at full-volume has the potential to damage your hearing.
  • Set yourself up for success: Most tablets and smart phones have an option under settings to reduce the maximum output of the device.   By reducing how loud the device can get, you are limiting hazardous noise exposure.
  • Use foam earplugs or earmuffs when engaging in loud recreational activities such as going to concerts, woodworking, hunting or riding ATVs.
